We Can Lose Touch With Ourselves in Many Ways

People often turn to therapy in hardship or crisis. It can help with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, transitions, and more. It can also offer something broader: a place to understand yourself more deeply, develop richer relationships, and live with greater freedom, connection, and vitality.

We may feel disconnected from parts of ourselves, lonely even in relationships that matter most, burdened by a weight that is difficult to carry alone, or stuck in familiar, self-defeating patterns.

Amid constant information, advice, and stimulation, psychotherapy offers a different kind of space: a place to slow down, listen more closely, and become curious about what our experience may be communicating.

My Approach

My work is grounded in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy and informed by relational, attachment-based, family-systems, and other evidence-based approaches. I understand symptoms not only as problems to eliminate, but also as meaningful adaptations: ways we learned to protect ourselves, preserve relationships, or navigate difficult circumstances.

Therapy may begin with immediate concerns and practical change, while also exploring longstanding patterns and experiences that are harder to see or name.

Therapy can open new possibilities, not only for the future, but also in how we make meaning of the past. What once felt fixed may become more flexible; what felt impossible to think about may begin to find words.

I have a longstanding clinical and scholarly interest in trauma and in how difficult experiences—and patterns formed when we were most vulnerable—continue to shape identity, relationships, emotional life, and our sense of possibility. I believe our capacity for development and growth continues throughout life, perhaps especially after trauma or adversity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of therapy do you provide in San Mateo and Palo Alto?

I provide individual psychotherapy for adults, young adults and college students, school-age children and adolescents, as well as couples therapy, family therapy, and parent consultation. I generally work directly with children ages five and older; for younger children, I may work with parents through parent consultation.

My work is primarily grounded in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic thinking, with attention to relationships, attachment, development, and the ways our histories continue to shape how we experience ourselves and others. I also integrate other approaches when they are useful, including practical and skills-based interventions. I see patients in person in San Mateo and Palo Alto and offer telehealth throughout California.

Where are your offices, and what areas do you serve?

I have offices in San Mateo and Palo Alto and work with patients from throughout the Peninsula and South Bay, including Belmont, Burlingame, San Carlos, Redwood City, Menlo Park, Sunnyvale, and San Jose, as well as surrounding communities. I also offer telehealth throughout California.

How much does therapy cost?

Please contact me for my current rates. I reserve a limited number of reduced-fee appointments based on financial need and availability. If cost is a concern, you are welcome to ask about current options.

Do you accept insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement. I can provide a monthly superbill for you to submit to your insurance company.

What should I ask my insurance company about out-of-network benefits?

Ask whether your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, whether you have an out-of-network deductible, and how much your plan reimburses once the deductible is met. You may also want to ask how to submit a superbill and whether there are limits on the number of sessions covered.

How often will we meet?

Most psychotherapy begins with weekly sessions, although frequency depends on your needs and the nature of the work. Some people benefit from meeting more frequently, particularly in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. We can discuss what makes sense during our initial meetings.
